Belle Boyd, the teenaged "Secesh Cleopatra," shot a Union soldier in her home, became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, seduced Yankees and rebels alike, and developed an unhealthy obsession with General Stonewall Jackson. 

Elizabeth Van Lew

Elizabeth Van Lew, a wealthy "spinster" in the Confederate capital, hid escaped Union prisoners in her home and organized a far-reaching spy ring right under the noses of rebel detectives. 

General George McClellan

General George McClellan, the egomaniacal commander of the Army of the Potomac, was adored by his soldiers (Emma included) but clashed constantly with President Lincoln. 

Allan Pinkerton

The famed detective Allan Pinkerton (pictured below with President Lincoln), worked an an agent for the Union army, and conducted surveillance on both Belle Boyd and Rose Greenhow. 

Rose Greenhow

Rose Greenhow, a widow and doyenne of Washington DC society, had affairs with powerful Northern politicians, used her young daughter to secure information for rebel generals, and traveled abroad to lobby for the Confederacy. 

Emma Edmonds

Emma Edmonds, a 19-year-old from rural Canada, disguised herself as "Frank Thompson," enlisted in the Union army, and went undercover as a spy several times, all the while fearing that her gender would be discovered. 

Mary Jane Bowser

Mary Jane Bowser, a former slave for Elizabeth Van Lew's family, went undercover as a servant in the Confederate White House, where she put her eidetic memory to good use.

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson

Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, the celebrated Confederate general who was as enigmatic as he was brilliant. Belle Boyd fixated on him, expressing a desire to "occupy his tent and share his dangers." 

Jerome Robbins

Jerome Robbins, Emma's comrade in the Army of the Potomac, becomes her confidante and her crush, privy to the secrets that could destroy her.
